Splashtop remote desktop

Here are two videos that show the chapel configuration for using an Ipad and a laptop to show presentations. A key component is having a separate WiFi since there is both a Desktop application and a iPad application. Here is a link to the Splashtop Website with more information.

  1. Wonderful video!!! Very informative, and it detailed the setup. What a good idea to run the presentation through your laptop, but cue it through your iPad, so that everything will always run smoothly (since it doesn't have to go through your iPad and through the computer and then through the projector, as I previously thought.

The quality of the video was also unprecendented for a tutorial -- the camera was steady and there were no sounds of the camera hitting anything.

We use air server in the classroom, and you can definitely see the effects of streaming the iPad picture wirelessly to the computer-- no smooth transitions whatsoever. Your setup is very effective, but fancy. The setup is perfect for anyone with 2 ipads, but if I just had one iPad for the manuscript, I could probably survive just with a wireless clicker connected to the computer, and not have to pay for the splash top app nor the router. I don't think this is the most practical application of splash top, but it is very effective for the resources that you have.

Want a really useful application for this? A year ago, some friends of mine and I hosted a jeopardy competition and used a similar setup. If you use Jeopardy Labs to make a simple jeopardy game, you can control everything with the iPad. Look here: https://jeopardylabs.com/play/history-of-christianity-50-dates for a sample. Conjure this up on the computer, and control it with your iPad to make a simple but really clean-looking jeopardy competition complete with automatic scoring and up to 4 teams (or, as we did, count your own scores separately).

    Keep up the good work.

  2. Thank you for your comments. Yes, the 2 iPads is luxury. One is my personal iPad and the other is the school issued device. If using only one, like you said, I could probably either print the manuscript or use a clicker (which I have). Splashtop is not that costly ($4.99) for personal use and the Streamer desktop client is free.

I have tried AirServer today in chapel It does the job, but only if you are running the presentation from the Ipad, AND also don't mind if the image does not take up the whole screen on the projector.

Regarding the camera work, I was using my iPhone with a lapel mic and not the standard microphone on the phone itself. This avoided some of the external noise coming from construction and improved the sound quality.

There are some bugs to work out for sure, but thanks for stopping in and offering your comments! I'll definitely check out the jeopardy game. That looks like fun.
